Northeast Mississippi Music

46be2-hdr_homeElvis Presley and blues legend Howlin’ Wolf were from Northeast Mississippi, but some say that compared to the Mississippi Delta and other parts of the state, the region’s music and musicians have received little attention from scholars.

Hence, the creation of The Northeast Mississippi Music Documentation Project, a partnership of the Mississippi Arts Commission and the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi.

Click through the website and you can see a number of regional singers who were documented during research conducted in 2002 and 2003. Their styles include bluegrass, dulcimer, country and gospel.
